Repair Smart.

When a device stops working — or just feels degraded — the reflex is to replace. Often, the right answer is to repair. This lesson is the decision rule: when does repair win, when does refurbished replacement win, and where do you actually get repairs done in Luxembourg without getting ripped off?

Why repair is the default

Lifecycle math, applied

Foundations Lesson 3 established that ~80 % of a device's lifetime CO₂ is in manufacturing. That means: every repair that keeps a working device in service avoids a fresh ~250 kg CO₂ (laptop) or ~70 kg (phone). A €60 battery replacement that buys you two more years is, in carbon terms, one of the most efficient interventions you can make.

The reflex "it's old, it's slow, time to replace" is usually wrong. Foundations Lesson 2 showed why: single-thread CPU performance has barely improved since 2018. The thing that makes an old laptop feel old is almost never the CPU. It is:

Battery below 70 % of original capacity — fixable for €40–90.
Storage still on mechanical HDD — fixable with SSD upgrade for €60–150.
RAM at 4–8 GB while modern web apps assume 16 — fixable for €30–100 on machines where RAM is still modular.
Software clutter — fixable for free with a factory reset or fresh OS install.

None of these require a new device. All of them are addressable for a fraction of the cost of replacement.

The repairs that pay back fastest

Common private-user repairs, ordered by value per euro spent. The 65 % rule below tells you when repair wins; this table tells you which repairs are worth even considering.

The first three rows are no-brainers. A €60 SSD on an old laptop or a €60 battery on a fading phone almost always wins on every metric: cost, carbon, time saved. The bottom row is the trap: motherboard swaps almost always fail the 65 % rule, because the devices that need them are already old enough that refurbished replacement is the better deal.

Where to actually get repairs done in Luxembourg

Three tiers, in order of preference

Repair is not a single thing — it's a spectrum from "do it yourself" to "send it to the manufacturer". Three tiers, in roughly the order you should consider them:

Tier 1 — Repair Cafés (free, community). Organised across Luxembourg by repaircafe.lu with CELL ASBL. Regular events at the Schluechthaus in Luxembourg City, plus Bertrange, Esch-sur-Alzette (Facilitec), and many municipalities. Volunteers help diagnose and fix electronics, bikes, clothing — for free. They cannot do major repairs but they can guide you, identify the failing component, and often fix simple things on the spot.

Tier 2 — DIY with iFixit. iFixit.com publishes free step-by-step guides for thousands of devices, with photographs at every step. They also sell the parts and tool kits required. Most battery and screen replacements need only a precision screwdriver kit (€20) and patience (45 min – 2 h). The financial savings over a repair shop are substantial; the learning is permanent.

Tier 3 — Commercial repair shops. Widely available across Luxembourg City, Esch-sur-Alzette and other towns. Always get a written quote first and compare it against the 65 % rule. What about warranty and screen repair?

Two common worries

Two questions come up consistently:

"Will third-party repair void my warranty?" Inside the EU: no, not automatically. The EU's consumer protection regime (and from July 2026 the Right to Repair Directive explicitly) says manufacturers cannot void warranties just because you used an independent repair shop. They can refuse to cover damage caused by a botched third-party repair — but that's a different thing. For modern Apple devices specifically, third-party screen replacement may trigger a "non-genuine display" warning (a software check), but it does not void the warranty for other components.

"Are third-party screen replacements worse?" The honest answer: yes, often, but not always. Genuine parts (manufacturer-supplied) deliver the original colour calibration, touch sensitivity, and brightness. Third-party screens vary widely — some are very close to OEM, some are noticeably worse. If you care about display quality (photo work, video editing) and the device is recent, insist on a genuine part; the price difference is usually €40–80 over generic. If the device is older and you just need it functional, generic is fine.

Why this matters for the rest of the path

Connecting the dots

Repair is the first response when something fails. But sometimes the issue isn't a broken device — it's a constrained one: an unsupported OS, a slow web browser, a need that the hardware was never designed for.
